LEARNING SERIES: INTRO TO WINTER FAT BIKE ULTRAS
What Is a Fat Bike Ultra?
Fat bike winter ultras are long distance fat bike events that take place often in extreme conditions during the coldest part of the year in the snow. Ultra distance winter fat bike events are typically longer or more extreme than typical fat bike races, or both. They have riders ride self-supported and may have required gear lists including sleeping bags and pads or required activities such as the ability to boil water to ensure that participants have the gear and expertise to survive during an emergency.
How to Get Started With Fat Bike Winter Ultras
The grandfather of winter ultras is the Iditarod Trail Invitational in Alaska with 350 and 1,000 mile options. It's extremely remote, traverses severe winter conditions, and is the most iconic and storied event in the ultra community. Many events have several distance options in order to work your way up in distance. The St. Croix 40 in Minnesota is an entry level winter fat bike ultra race that gives participants all the experiences of an ultra (overnight riding, water boil requirement, starting the race in a bivy) while being on a shorter course with nearby support. With options covering the entire spectrum, you can try this discipline and work your way up to longer more extreme events.
